Q&A with style creator, Melanie Skeoch

Owner/Hairstylist @ Mellow Hair in St. Catharines Ontario, Canada

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a cross between a pixie cut and a disconnected undercut. It is the perfect combination of cute and feminine, yet still edgy and fun. My favorite thing about this look is the undercut, and of course the color. I love icy cool tones!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

For this particular one, my product of choice to maintain the color is “sterling silver” shampoo (an anti-brass shampoo) by AG. For styling, used KMS Add Volume spray on wet hair. After drying and styling, I finished with Goldwell Unlimitor spray wax to give it some texture.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is best suited for someone with a heart shaped, oval or square face. For closely cropped styles like this one, you need to have the right hairline in the back (higher is better). Keep in mind is that it will draw more attention to your facial features. Because of this, some women tend to want to play up their makeup.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

If you are considering this type of look, I suggest having a good consultation with your stylist who knows your hair (and you personally) to decide if it’s the right choice. Also, with a shorter style like this, you will have to maintain the look every four to five weeks.

Q&A with style creator, Peggie Huang

Hairstylist @ ARROJO Studio in Soho, NYC

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a disconnected undercuts. It was inspired by a bowl cut but produced with a razor to give it softness and more texture.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s a really playful haircut. It’s very versatile, giving the client lots of different ways to wear it.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I would recommend ARROJO products. Their texture paste and hair cream specifically, which will create the texture and messy look.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look will be great for those people who are looking for a cool, edgy, modern, or even a bald kind of look. It is great for straight or wavy textured hair.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Understand that it’s a short haircut and it needs higher maintenances. It’s a really fun haircut to have!

Master Stylist @ IKON SALON in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an edgy, long textured style with some disconnection throughout it as well. It is a trendy hairstyle and especially nice if you are working on growing out a previously, very short style.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Depending on the look you’re trying to create and your lifestyle, I would do a quick blow dry using my fingers to create some volume and texture, then smooth out with a brush if necessary. Follow up with a pomade, running it through the hair in different directions, styling it to whatever you are in the mood for.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is basically for anyone who is open to change if your hair is long. Those with normal to fine hair and an oval or heart shaped face shape pull it off best. Anyone who is looking for something more edgy and low maintenance could try it though.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

If it’s crossed your mind to try a short look, just do it. Short cuts are always edgy and never go out of style, and you can always trendy it up with color. There are so many short fun cuts out there, but make sure you go to a stylist that can be very creative with your hair. Step out of your comfort zone!

Master Stylist @ The Crazy Arrow Salon in Alamogordo, NM

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a sweet, edgy, and feminine pixie. I love the contrast between the short hair on the sides and the longer wavy hair on top. I also colored the hair with dark brown and a hint of metallic violet to give an industrial edge. The combination of the haircut and color come together to create a truly unique look.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

To style this, use K Mousse Bouffant by Kerastase on damp hair then air dry or diffuse to enhance the texture. This mousse will hold the texture well without becoming crunchy. Taming wavy hair is all about the products. Having great products which hold your wave and fight frizz make a night and day difference to the end results. After the hair is dry, add some Kenra Dry Texture Spray to enhance the texture even more.

What type of person would this look work best for?

I recommend this look for the stylish woman on the go. It’s perfect for the busy mom as well. It is an easy, no-fuss style, especially if you have a cool wavy texture! This is a hairstyle that lets you play with your own texture. This look will work well with a petite, slimmer face.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

This is a low maintenance style, but you must go back to the salon for a clean-up every three to five weeks. Not everyone can pull off this look, but if you can, it will make a serious statement!

Stylist @ Salon Luxe in Claremont, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look is inspired by some of my favorite short haircuts worn by Mia Ferro in Rosemary’s Baby and Twiggy. My favorite thing about a short crop like this is that it ends up looking more feminine than when the client’s hair was longer!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I love the Davines line. I shampooed her with Your Hair assistant prep shampoo and the mild cream conditioner. This is a nice cleansing and conditioning combo that won’t weigh the hair down. I finished with This Is A Dry Texturizer. I’ve really been into using dry finishing sprays on short hair lately to add almost a matte, fur-like texture. Plus I find it easier for the clients to use at home.

What type of person would this look work best for?

Everyone can wear short hair. It comes down to personality. A woman who wears her hair short is confident, daring, flirty and adventurous with a side of practicality. This look can be customized to accommodate any face shape. Going back to Mia and Twiggy, Mia has a very short fringe and Twiggy has a longer side swept bangs, creating the same look but accommodating their different face shapes. Low hairlines and really pear-shaped faces might be a bit of a challenge, but not impossible! At the end of the day, it’s pure personality and poise that pulls off short hair.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

If you’ve been wearing your hair pulled back in a ponytail for a while and feel confident a short crop will look just as good if not better, go for it! You can also work in baby steps with your stylist, playing with shorter and shorter shapes each appointment.

Q&A with style creator, Travis Takara

Stylist @ LuxeLab Salon in Santa Monica, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a fun textured look. My favorite thing about this haircut is how textured and piecey it is, making it super easy for the client to style. This client’s hair at this length is very thick and resistant, so the length is perfect for her.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I love Clay Definer by Shu Uemura. It’s a pomade that is great for all hair types. I love that it brings out the piecey-ness of this haircut without making it feel too gritty or sticky. To create this look, I put Clay Definer in while the hair was wet and blow dried it into shape. Wet hair is easier to mold into place, especially if you’re a perfectionist with your hair.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This haircut works best on many hair types. My favorite is shorter fine hair because, at this length, it sits so perfectly and makes it very easy to style. In terms of lifestyle, I’d say this works well for someone that has an on-the-go lifestyle that doesn’t have a lot of spare time to spend on their hair.

This haircut looks great on many different face shapes, but an oval face shape especially. Because the client doesn’t have long hair to cover the chin or cheekbones, it really shows off the softness in her features. That being said, just because you don’t have an “ideal face shape” doesn’t mean you can’t pull one off. A fun and outgoing personality is really all you need!

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My best tip for someone that’s considering this haircut is to be comfortable with yourself. This is such a fun haircut and there are so many ways to accessorize your look because you have a cute and edgy haircut. I would say to let the haircut inspire you to try new things with your wardrobe or even your makeup.

Q&A with Style Creator Carrie

Hairstylist @ Bang Salon in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an artistically chic pixie. Since the definition of artistically is “in an aesthetically pleasing way”, I thought that fit well. It is also fitting since my model happens to be a professionally trained vocalist. The great thing about this style is that it creates a beautiful frame around one’s features and it’s so easy to manage.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Since the hair has been lightened, I strongly recommend a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. For this haircut, a firmer styling paste can be used to show off the texture and definition for more of a “rocker” look. Alternately, a pomade can be used for a softer, more natural style.

What type of person would this look work best for?

One trait that people who look fabulous with a really short haircut have in common is more delicate facial features with good cheekbones. It’s even more flattering on someone with large eyes or a fuller mouth. Cuts like this work best on oval, square or heart shaped faces that are not too long or especially broad in the jaw area.

The great thing about this haircut, and why I get requests for styles like this or similar, so often, is the ease of daily wear. It’s so effortless to style and maintains. My clients love that their hairstyle doesn’t take too much time away from their busy schedule. With a shorter haircut, it’s basically wash and go.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Transitioning from a long to a super-short ‘do can be a new and bewildering experience. A person considering doing so should have a consultation with a stylist. Visuals help while sharing ideas, so bring photos of hairstyles that you like to you and your stylist can determine what works best for you.

Q&A with Style Creator Holly Seidel

Hairstylist @ Winslow Salon in Kirkland, WA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This short pixie hairstyle is a mix of short and edginess, but also soft and feminine. I love the bits and pieces that frame her face and neck.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I used a pomade mousse from R+Co hair called Aircraft to fingerstyle and air dry. You can use your favorite light pomade or hair wax.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look was created for someone with a naturally wavy texture, but can work on anyone with fine to medium texture. It’s is very low maintenance because you can simply tousle or air dry it. It will look best on oval or square shaped faces and with any skin tone.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Keep in mind that this was shaved to her natural texture, so be open minded about your texture and how your hair falls. That’s what makes it special and personal for you and your style!

Q&A with Style Creator Cami Mcknight

Hairstylist at Hair-Do Salon in Mesa, AZ

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a short cut with a buzzed undercut. It is very textured because she has a lot of hair and we wanted it to be cute and funky. My favorite thing about the cut is that it can be worn to both sides and is very versatile.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

To create this look, I love using Bumble and bumble Texture before I blow dry. I use that on all of my pixies because it gives a good texture and hold for the style. At the end, I always use a pomade. I love Bumble and Bumble Sumo Tech. It gives the hair that piecey and messy look. Products are so important because they bring a haircut to life.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look would work best for people who have strong but small and symmetrical features. This style doesn’t have a lot of softness, so it draws attention to the jawline. Daily maintenance is great in regard to styling, but this is a more high maintenance and needs cleaning up every four or so weeks.

Can a pixie cut work with thick hair?

Yes, thick hair is always a plus. What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

I would make sure you can afford to keep it trimmed up every month and be ready to spend money on the appropriate products to make it look cute. Products are key! They need lots of texturizing to lay right and be easy to wear.

Q&A with Style Creator Ceairra Kopcheck

Hairstylist @ Mane Tame in Arizona

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an edgy look with some sass, depending on how you want to wear it. You can wear this slicked to the side for a more formal look, or textured and messy for an everyday style. I love this look because it is very versatile and I truly feel like anyone can rock it.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I recommend a texture spray/workable hairspray and a pomade. To create this look, I used Kenra Professional Texture Spray and Layrite Original Pomade.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This hairstyle works for everyone and all ages. I have seen platinum on so many skin types and I think it looks beautiful on everyone. This is great for someone that wants something they can maintain easily while still wanting to be able to style for different occasions.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

The best tip for this look is to use products! A lot of times I see people getting frustrated because their style never looks the same as when they left the salon, but they aren’t taking the time to use what’s right for their hair! Don’t be scared to try different things and always start with a small amount of product and add more if needed.
